During my last visit Medoc, I took the opportunity to race in the afternoon in the vineyards to enjoy the cool evening. And I had some big surprises. Go, put on your running shoes!
I cross the hamlet of Saint-Lambert and meets the building. Obviously, this is the winery of Château Latour Schedule (as it is written on his wall). Never heard of …

Gentlemen’s hats seem to have gone out of fashion generally speaking, but that will never be the case at Brown Derby, one of the finest wine retailers in the entire USA, founded in Springfield MO in 1937. This remarkable wine shop was named by its owner, John A. Morris, after a Hollywood restaurant, which in turn was called after the stylish hat that was so popular in the thirties and which Brown Derby continues to use as its logo.

On a recent US national media tour to tell folks about www.wineontheweb.com I surprised KOTV Tulsa OK’s early morning host, Rick Wells by suggesting tornado cellars could make great wine cellars, especially for the long-ageing of Vintage Port.
My specific suggestion concerned the opportunity that currently existed to purchase 2 remarkable Vintage Ports from two of the greatest of all Port House, namely Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca.

As a result of his classic ” School of Tasting “Pierre Casamayor explores in depth the possible alliances of 88 recipes. Each has a double page where we can find the recipe itself and usually four specific wines, ie for example, not a “Haut-Medoc” but a “Haut-Medoc, Chateau Malescasse 1995″ which he describes the tasting before the meal and the dish.

The directors of Cognac Prunier believe that the classic house was founded in 1701. Unfortunately they can only provide documented evidence of a foundation date of 1768 because a terrible fire destroyed most of their written records. However, despite the fire, the French Revolution and three wars, the independent family-owned business, which likes to refer to itself as ‘la Vieille Maison’ (tr. the Old House), survived. During that time it has acquired its reputation by judicious production and expert blending. Today it can argue – with some justification – that its Prunier De Luxe is the finest of all the VS Cognacs. Its new bottle presentation is as refined and elegant as the contents themselves and it is available in quarter, half and full-size bottles.

The tiny hamlet of Ripley, Ohio, some 55 miles east of Cincinnati, is the scene of a fascinating experiment to produce international class wine on the north bank of the Ohio River valley. At the time of writing, which is March 2001, Ron Barrett and Nancy Bentley have, at Kinkead Vineyards, a vineyard – but no winery. They are convinced that the latter will be completed by August 15th, just 5 months away. Nancy, a marketeer, PR and superb cook, is so convinced that literally every brick will click into place on that date, she has promised to up-date Wine on the Web readers monthly. When mid-August arrives some of the varietals amongst their 3-year-old vines will be ready to offer their first wines.

Nobilo is the second largest wine company in New Zealand. It was founded in 1943 by Nikola Nobilo, a Croatian of Italian descent from the island of Korcula. In fact several members of the Nobilo family still survive on the island and have been tending vineyards there for some 300 years. Nikola planted his first small New Zealand vineyard at Huapai, just to the northwest of Auckland on the North Island, and went on to inspire a family-driven operation that developed into the leading exporter of New Zealand wines.

Careful note should be made of owner Peter Rymill’s middle name ‘Riddoch’. It comes from his great grandfather, John Riddoch, who is best-known as the Father of the Coonawarra region in South Australia.
Riddoch, initially a humble brickmaker, was born in Scotland in 1827 and sailed to Australia in 1850 on an assisted passage. In 1852 he struck gold at Ovens Valley, discovering a nugget that he sold for US$1450. This would have been enough to buy around 10 small houses, but instead he immediately invested the money in a bullock wagon and the construction of a supply store at Ballarat.
