B. R. Cohn Winery, Glen Ellen
In mid-September 2003, a grand opening celebrated completion of a stunning new hospitality center at B. R. Cohn Winery, Glen Ellen. The building, which was originally the family home of winery owner Bruce Cohn, his wife Sharon and their children still has the welcoming appearance of a family dwelling, and that impression was an important part of the plan when work commenced on the project.
“We wanted to preserve the 1920s style of architecture,” says Bruce, “so we paid a lot of attention to small details. In designing the mahogany paneling and the long tasting bar, for example, every board was hand picked, with the grain matched perfectly. The floor is tiled, and the surround of the fireplace is tiled, with fluted wooden pillars.
“We have designed a special display case for the B. R. Cohn vinegars and herb dipping oils and another for logo clothing. In the private tasting room where our reserve wines may be tasted, we will mount regular displays of works by local artists. We are also setting up a food section where chilled wines and box lunches will be available to enjoy in one of the inviting picnic areas, under the trees, on the flagstone patio or under the arbor. And, even though I know it is politically incorrect these days, I also plan a special ‘Wine and Cigars’ room.”
When Bruce purchased the land in 1974 there were 14 acres of grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Except for one acre of Pinot Noir, all the vines were pulled out in 1990 and replanted to new clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. From that single acre of Pinot Noir, B. R. Cohn produces about 140 cases each year, blended with a small amount of Carignane. With this small quantity, the Pinot Noir is only available in the tasting room and to members of the Olive Hill Estate Wine Club. A winery visitor automatically becomes a member of the club with the purchase of a case of wine.
Three other B. R. Cohn wines; Syrah, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc are also available only in the tasting room.
Added to the excitement about the new hospitality area, B. R. Cohn has just received permission to double the number of events which may be held at the winery.
