In old vintage port, the “breaking” to be taken quite literally. One method uses a heavy knife (eg a sword), the other with a Port tongs.
Port tongs are recommended and rich in tradition. They are easier to handle and more effective than a knife.
Take a cast iron port tongs and hold the two glasses into the fire or in a hot oven until they are red hot. Then put them below the cork floor for a few seconds on the bottle neck. It breaks you replace the clamp with a cloth soaked in cold water and you will see the glass.
Remove the upper neck and carefully decant.
