Super-Tuscans

To be irreverent, you could think of Super-Tuscans as “Chianti with a college education.” Where Chianti is a blend of wines made from red and white grapes, Super-Tuscans are blends that can include Cabernet or other “Big Red” varietals in their mix. (It can also be 100 % Sangiovese as well.)

Super-Tuscans were born in the 70s when Chianti producers rebelled against DOCG regulations governing the production of their wine. Once wine producers began experimenting with mixtures other than the traditional ones (adding Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah to the more traditional Canaoilo, for example), a new and age-worthy wine was created. In fact, the early Super-Tuscans were not really drinkable until they’d put some age on. And even today, if you’re serving a Super-Tuscan that’s less than 10 years old, it will need to be decanted for several hours before you pour.)

Syrah

Its name sounds almost like a cheer–”When Johnny comes marching home again, Syrah, Syrah”– and fans of this high-quality red wine grape have something to cheer about as the varietal is poised to overtake Merlot as one of the most popular red table wines.

The Syrah grape is a noble grape, and the premier wine grape of the Rhone Valley (in Southern France). It is also grown in Australia, where it is known as shiraz and often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon; South Africa and California. The grape is often confused with the sound-alike Petit Sirah, which is another varietal altogether.

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is pretty much a wine for all seasons.

The versatile varietal produces several very different kinds of wine. Best known is probably white Zinfandel, a light, fruity blush wine with a low alcohol content and about 1.5 percent residual sugar. Red Zinfandel wine runs the gamut in body, with some as light and drinkable as a Beaujolais, and others as tannic and full-bodied as a Cabernet Sauvignon. Sometimes late-picked grapes full of concentrated sugar are made into luscious (almost syrupy) “late-harvest Zinfandels,” which are served in place of dessert wines like sherry or port. “Old Vines” Zinfandels (wine made from grapevines that are many decades old) are fairly common in California, where they offer a cost-effective alternative to high-priced California Cabernet Sauvignon wines and are complex wines full of jammy flavors.

The price is always cheaper: the wine is that still true?

mdspreadOf learned experts looking at the cradle of wine quality decree said, without appeal, “beneath a sale price of € x – the figure varies depending on the weight of the media expert said – a wine is not worthy of being awarded the title of AOC. ” It has the merit of simplicity, it strikes simple minds but it is often silly. In fact the sale price to consumers has sometimes little correlation with the cost of wine.
