In order to appreciate wine, it’s essential to understand the characteristics different grapes offer and how those characteristics should be expressed in wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel are all red grapes, but as wines their personalities are quite different. Even when grown in different appellations and vinified using different techniques, a varietal wine always displays certain qualities, which are inherent in the grape’s personality. Muscat should always be spicy, Sauvignon Blanc a touch herbal. Zinfandel is zesty, with pepper and wild berry flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon is marked by plum, currant and black cherry flavors and firm tannins. Understanding what a grape should be as a wine is fundamental, and knowing what a grape can achieve at its greatest is the essence of fine-wine appreciation.

Despite its success with Cabernet and, in recent years, with Merlot as well, Chile has struggled with white wines.
Sauvignon Blanc arrived in the 19th century, with Cabernet, but traditionally was blended with Sémillon (as in Bordeaux) and aged in oak until the fruit disappeared, in the style of white Rioja. When Spanish winemaker Miguel Torres introduced cold fermentation techniques in 1978, the whites perked up, but then winemakers realized that much of the Sauvignon Blanc growing in Chile was an inferior clone (called Sauvignonasse or Sauvignon Vert here) that made dull or vegetal wines.
Chardonnay has only been widely planted over the past decade, largely in response to international demand, and so far the results have been humdrum. Though fruity and inexpensive, most of the wines have no advantage in style or quality over fighting varietals from Australia or California.

Chile is a thermometer of a country, 2,650 miles long and averaging only 110 miles wide. At the bottom is frozen Antarctica; at the top, the world’s driest desert. Santiago lies right in the comfort zone, with warm summers and mild winters, cooler than Napa Valley but drier than Bordeaux. Serious wine vineyards begin just north of the city, and stretch 150 miles down the Central Valley, south to the town of Talca.

This is the Lagrein Riservas said for South Tyrol Cabernet wines and blends, which indicates that variety the tone. In the first major wine-tasting Plus Alto four years ago was still bad on these wines scolded: “wines with real character and depth are not easily found. The generous use of wood, which the producers have bestowed most of them, makes things any better. While wine tastings are holzgeschminkte many today in the favorite role, a more critical approach to keep the wines not yet stood still. Therefore they are often too superficial, and after a few years already, most wines taste more or less woody, brittle and charming.
