Canberra – Australia’s capital

Canberra is a planned city with about 300,000 inhabitants and emerged from the dispute between Sydney and Melbourne. As some of the two major cities were not built in New South Wales at the beginning of the 20th Century, especially the independent “Australian Capital Territory”, which only the government is assumed. The architect Walter Burley Griffin, in his Conception of the capital system, a mixture of triangles, squares and concentric circles selected.


The name originates from the Canberra Aboriginal term “Canberry” (meeting place). Be not deterred by the term “planned city”. A stopover is worthwhile in any case. Museums, parks and a spacious pedestrian precinct in the town provide variety. In summer the lake for swimming, in winter, the snow capped Snowy Mountains, just 1 1 / 2 to 2 hours away, close enough for day trips for skiing. Annually, a colorful “Floriade Festival” in mid-September to mid October. Also in the spring it can be in the midst of beautifully landscaped pedestrian street concerts that can pay almost anything Caribbean atmosphere.
