The courtship begins. The first dinner date. First impressions do count, requiring a thoughtful selection. A wine with staying power, but one that’s not too overbearing. Sophisticated yet playful, fresh but with depth. Why not try a Beaujolais, they’re light and refreshing yet maintain an air of tradition and subtle mystery? Besides, Beaujolais doesn’t exactly say commitment; it’s made to be drunk early, while it’s still fresh and exciting.
Nerves a flutter and romance in the air. Physical contact. With passion building and scents of anticipation wafting, thoughts naturally turn to red. Keep it suave and full-bodied, and make sure it finishes long. We recommend a Merlot for smoothness and ripe fruit, or a Shiraz for big, intense, peppery vigour.

The inevitable first-fight. Now is the time for comfort and consideration. When reassurance is called for, reach for a Chardonnay, preferably New World and oak-aged to bring out cream and vanilla. Cheer up and realise relationships are about compromise. Or start drinking alone.
A major turning point. A promotion, a deal gone good, whatever. There are certain wines that speak of class and reek of mystique. They may be over-the-top, but we’re looking for indulgence. When the going’s good the good go Bordeaux, Grand Cru of course, preferably with some age. The money wine. Or, if you’re a new-age sophisticate, pick up an Italian Barolo. Still huge, still indulgent, but easier on the wallet.
Simple bliss, the comfortable night-in. Good food, great conversation, a night together at home is the foundation for complex romance. Take this opportunity to have two bottles on hand. To get the night started go with a fresh Sauvignon Blanc or Dry Riesling. As the night evolves, progress to something heavier. Match the wine to the night’s menu, Pinot Noir is versatile and sophisticated.
The point of no return: proposal in hand. It’s time for dedication, confidence, and assurance. A wine to symbolize security, that’s also bold to match the momentous occasion. Red would be nice, with its representation of love, passion, and intensity. With all these considerations, we’d choose Cabernet Sauvignon. Alternately, we’d cede to Old Vine Zinfandel, for the obvious overtures to commitment and deep roots.
Rough patches, money runs low while stress runs high. There’s a wine for every budget. Elegance doesn’t always come at a steep price. Look to soulful wines, perhaps a bit misunderstood (which keeps prices lower). Tropical Gewürztraminer will transport you if you like white, or otherworldly Malbec will do the trick in red.
Anniversary or Celebration. Go with bubbly. Some things don’t need to change. Spring for Champagne if you desire, but there’s no need to overlook fizzies made elsewhere in the Methode Champenoise. Please serve in appropriate flutes.
